Secret ShopNET was the key business of ECom Communications Corporation of Calgary, Alberta. After the merger between ECom and Service Intelligence we decided to drop the Secret ShopNET name.

Working as a Researcher:

What do Researchers do?

Researchers visit specific stores and businesses anonymously for the purpose of observing and reporting on the quality of customer service delivered. The audits submitted by our Researchers enable clients to make employment decisions, reward staff for excellent performance, redirect staff who perform poorly and evaluate adherence to company service standards.

Service Intelligence Researchers are able to select the type and number of jobs they would like to complete. Assignments in each of the following industries are available to our shoppers (based on regional availability):

  • Gasoline
  • Fast Food
  • Family Dining
  • Entertainment and Attractions
  • Clothing
  • Furniture
  • And much, much more...
The Service Intelligence auditing process begins with on-line training. After completing initial education Researchers are able to select assignments, complete jobs by visiting a site or performing a telephone evaluation and finally entering the job data into the online database.

How much does a Researcher get paid?

Service Intelligence Researchers are paid as independent contractors at a specific hourly rate. Each assignment is designated with a certain number of hours and, if applicable, allowed expenses. For this reason, the amount a Researcher makes on a particular assignment can range from $7.00 to over $20.

Remember, when you take into account the free products and services that are available on many assignments, the total payable each hour can rise substantially. Examples of free products and services include:

  • Gasoline.
  • Fast food meals.
  • Sit down dining meals.
  • Retail products.
  • And much more...

Do Service Intelligence Researchers work part-time or full-time?

Researcher positions should be considered part-time or casual work. Some Researchers work as little as a few hours every other month, while others can spend 5 to 10 hours each and every week. The volume of work available to each Researcher is based on the following:

  • The amount of work available in your immediate area.
  • The number of "active" Researchers in your region.
  • Your level of experience/training.
  • Your level of professionalism and quality on past assignments.
  • Client specifications and restrictions.

Do I need previous experience as a Researcher to work for Service Intelligence?

No, previous experience is not necessary. Researchers are hired based on the information provided in their online application form, their aptitude and ability to meet assignment requirements. Service Intelligence offers extensive online training, which will broaden your understanding of the Secret Shopping industry, and aid you in becoming a highly effective Researcher.

Is there work for me in my area currently?

Service Intelligence is rapidly expanding. Even if there is no work available directly in your community today, there likely will be tomorrow! Your work volume is solely dependent on our clients' current needs.

What is the application process?

The process of Applying to work with Service Intelligence as a Researcher is as follows:

  1. Go to the online application.
  2. Fill out the application thoroughly and professionally. (The application is the main method of decision making regarding Researcher selection; therefore, it is in your best interest that the information provided be presented proficiently.)
  3. Your application will kept in our Candidate database for a period of six months and reviewed when we need Researchers in your area.
  4. Once there is work in your area you be sent an email message with your login and password information. You are then able to enter the rest of our web-site and start your Service Intelligence career.
  5. If you are not contacted within six months it is because we have not found any work in your area. However, we encourage you to reapply semi-annually.

I submitted an application some time ago and have not heard from anyone. When can I expect to be contacted?

Researchers are hired based on the availability of work in their area of residence. After you have submitted your application, we may not contact you immediately, so do not worry if you do not hear from us. We will get in touch with as soon as there is work available in your area.

All applications are kept in the database for a period of six months. Please note - if you submitted your application earlier than six months ago, please feel free to reapply here.

Becoming a Researcher:

What is the process of becoming a Researcher?

When there is a need for additional Researchers, online applications are carefully reviewed. When selected, you will receive an email message with your personal login and password information. Using your password and shopper name, you are then able to enter the rest of our web-site. Once you have logged on, you will need to spend some time online completing your Certification training in order to qualify to work as a shopper. Once qualified you will have access to your shopper home page, where you will find information on jobs available, pay, clients, training and much more.

Will I be trained to work as a Researcher?

Comprehensive online training is provided for each and every Researcher. Through Certification training and client specific project reviews, Service Intelligence is able to provide our clients with highly trained and skilled Researchers. We at Service Intelligence pride ourselves on our standards of excellence. We are certain that the training provided will broaden your understanding of the Secret Shopping industry, and aid you in becoming a highly effective Researcher.

How soon after I have been hired will I be able to start auditing?

If assignments are available in your area, new shoppers can start working immediately after completing the initial training.

Does it cost anything to be a Researcher? (ie. licenses, training)

No. Service Intelligence covers all expenses incurred in locating, screening, training and managing our team of Researchers, and does not require Researchers to pay a "membership" fee, "start-up" fee or any other sum. If you would like to work as a Researcher with Service Intelligence, simply fill out an online application and watch your e-mail for your "Welcome" letter.

Who will supervise my work?

Program services staff supervise all aspects of Researcher work. There is always someone available by email or telephone if a Shopper has a problem or question.

Assignments and Expenses

If hired, how will I receive and submit my assignments?

All assignments are posted online. From the "Jobs Available", you may select the assignments that interest you. You are always told ahead of time what the assignment details are, including:

  • Approved expense amount (if applicable).
  • The exact location of the assignment.
  • Approved hours for the assignment.
  • Assignment deadline(s).
  • Details and nature of the procedure.
As a Researcher you will be able to select the jobs you wish, and submit your completed assignments using the online forms provided.

If hired, how will I receive payment for the assignments that I complete?

All Researchers with Service Intelligence are paid as independent contractors, by automatic bank deposit, once per month.
Upon successful completion of each job, Service Intelligence will immediately record the date of submission, job#, client's name, location name, wage amount, expense amount (if any), special bonus amounts and the total amount owed on your Shopper Pay Statement. It is this total amount that is used in generating payroll.

Will I incur any expenses working as a Researcher?

No. Assignments that require shoppers to purchase a meal, retail item, etc. have a stipulated expense amount that is automatically calculated into the shoppers pay once the assignment has been completed. This ensures that shoppers are reimbursed for expenses incurred while completing assignments.
Expenses such as gas to and from the shop location are covered by the job payment. As a trained shopper you will be able to complete most assignments in less than an hour (this includes getting the information about the job from the web-site, doing the job and typing in the results on our web-site afterwards).

Will I need to travel to complete assignments for Service Intelligence?

Extra travel costs are not covered. Since Service Intelligence does not cover travel costs, most Researchers do not travel to complete assignments. When selecting assignments, try to accept jobs that you will be able to complete without extra payment for travel. If you decide to work outside your immediate area, you are responsible for any associated costs.

Can I refuse certain assignments?

Yes. You select only the assignments you are interested in and willing to complete given the job parameters.

After accepting an assignment, how long will I have to complete the shop and submit my report?

The due date of the assignment is detailed on the Jobs Available page. Once you complete the audit, though, we require that you submit your report within 24 hours. Return to top

Computer Questions

Why can't I use WebTV?

WebTV is not capable of handling the advanced funtionality that you will require once you become a Service Intelligence Researcher. Our system uses a fair bit of JavaScript that WebTV units do not recognize.

What software do I require to work with Service Intelligence?

Service Intelligence recommends that our Researchers maintain an up-to-date browser and email program on their system. At this time, the browsers we suggest you use are: Netscape Communicator 4.0+ (excluding 4.05 and 4.08) or Microsoft Explorer 4.0+.
If you need to upgrade, please you the following links to access the latest versions of browsers from Netscape and Microsoft.

What type of computer will I require to work with Service Intelligence?

N.B. If you are able to complete the online application without anomalies, you have the necessary basic hardware. If not, you can upgrade your software.

Any computer capable of running recent versions of Netscape or MS Internet Explorer should be sufficient. We do strongly recommend a minimum of 28,800 baud rate modem (28.8 kbps).

How much knowledge of the Internet do I need?

You should be familiar with all the basic functions of your browser. Service Intelligence does not provide specific Internet training or technical support.

Do I have to pay for my own Internet connection?

Yes. All shoppers with Service Intelligence are considered independent contractors, and are therefore responsible for their own operating expenses (i.e. computer, Internet access, maintenance, etc.)

Do I require my own computer?

Although having your own computer is an advantage, it is not necessary. You will require an email address where you can be reached, as well as regular access to the Internet in order to select and submit assignments as well as regular access to the Internet to select and complete jobs.
