Sean Young Wins BDC Award

The recipients, all of whom are under thirty years of age, were recognized in a Gala event in Winnipeg October 1998. The event and the Award are sponsored by the Business Development Bank of Canada and are a part of the Small Business Week celebration.

Press coverage of Mr. Young included articles in the Globe and Mail, an interview with the Calgary Herald and a profile in a special feature included in the November issues of L’Actualite and Maclean’s.

“What makes us a unique, exciting and fast-growing company is the technology component of our core service,” says Young. “This consists of a dynamic, multimedia, wide-area database system operating across computer platforms on the Internet.”

The panel of judges for the award included BDC personnel, media and members of the Alberta business community. They were especially impressed with ECom’s operating success as well as the innovative use of technology in a traditionally non-technological field.

“More than anything else, it is nice to get some recognition from the business community that you’re doing something good here,” said Young of the award.

Along with the award comes participation in the Young Entrepreneur Mentors Program that pairs each winner with a prominent business person from their community. George Brookman, President and CEO of West Canadian Graphics will be mentoring Sean and ECom throughout the upcoming year.

“There’s no doubt I can learn a lot. That’s one of the great things about this – it’s a tremendous opportunity to be able to learn from someone who has been there before.”
